Stubbs: Garbutt Has Opportunity
U21s boss backs defender to fill Oviedo void in first-team squad.
Alan Stubbs believes Luke Garbutt is poised to grasp any first-team chances that come his way.
The young left-back was recently recalled from an impressive loan stint at Colchester United where he racked up 20 appearances and contributed three goals during the first part of the season.
Following the horrific double leg break suffered by Bryan Oviedo, Roberto Martinez recalled Garbutt to ensure cover and competition for Leighton Baines.
And having mentored the 20-year-old at second-string level, Stubbs believes his young charge must take any chances that come his way.
"He has got a big opportunity now," the Club's Under-21 boss told evertonfc.com.
"It is in unfortunate circumstances but when you look at it from the other side, that’s football. When one door closes, another one opens.
"We are obviously disappointed for Bryan and the way it’s come about but it is an opportunity for Luke now.
"He has done really well at Colchester and the manager has been very impressed with the way he has played and improved his game."
Speaking ahead of Monday's 0-0 draw against Tottenham Under-21s in which Garbutt played the full 90 minutes, Stubbs stated his eagerness to assess the defender's development.
"We’ll see Luke in training and will take it from there,” he explained.
"We’ll see how far he has come, how much of a benefit the loan has been, and how he has improved not just as a footballer but as a person as well.
"It does make you grow up when you go out on loan.
"It’s an opportunity for him now and it's basically what he makes of it."
