Roberto Martinez was in Everton Park on Tuesday evening to shed light on the Club's illustrious heritage.

The iconic tower which forms the centrepiece of Everton Football Club’s crest has been permanently turned blue, with the manager himself pressing the decisive switch.

The 235-year-old lock-up, known locally as Prince Rupert’s Tower, sits on a triangular piece of ground in Everton Park between Netherfield Road South and Everton Brow.

The launch event was also attended by the Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson and the Friends of Everton Park and is the culmination of a year-long project to light up the tower and showcase the unbreakable association between the Club and the community.

Hundreds of football fans and residents joined Martinez and special guests to celebrate the important piece of local history shining once more at the heart of the community.
Martinez said: "It's one of those moments that you need to be well aware of if you are part of Everton, whatever capacity it is; player, staff, manager or just someone with an interest in football.

"Our fans will tell you the tower is a special sign and where everything started - not just for Everton, but for football in the city.

"It's a good moment for what we are about at Everton - the community and tradition, the history of our Club."

Everton teamed up with the city council and the Friends of Everton Park to bring the tower to life, following a clean-up programme which has made it look more pristine than ever.

The project came about after the Club lit up the lock-up as part of its Christmas campaign to turn the city blue in 2012. It made such an impact on the local area, that the city council approached the Club to help fund the light up initiative permanently.

robbie parryJust an idea? Liverpool use the liver birds on their badge so why ? can't we project two big Everon badges on the Liver buildings?
