Captain Phil Jagielka insists the only way for Everton to respond from Tuesday's derby defeat is to channel their frustration into producing a much-improved display against Aston Villa.

The Blues will aim to shake off the disappointment of losing to Liverpool when they return to Goodison Park for the first time in three weeks on Saturday afternoon.

And Jagielka says he and his teammates owe Everton’s fans, who backed their team from the first whistle to the last at Anfield, a big performance.

“It’s three points that we have missed out on today and we are disappointed to lose to our rivals in the manner that we did,” Jagielka told evertontv.

“The fans are the ones that deserve the credit and we know in the changing room that we let them down.

“We know the only way we can get back on track is by performing well at home against Villa when we can hopefully get them singing again by taking three points.”

Everton commanded 61 percent possession and had 18 shots at goal compared to Liverpool’s 20.

But Jagielka was forced to rue slack defending in the first half when the hosts punished the Blues with three quick-fire goals within the space of 14 minutes.

“We knew it was going to be a tough night but we didn’t help ourselves,” he added. “We conceded some poor goals from individual errors and if you play like that at Liverpool, who have got an attacking threat, you are going to come unstuck.

“We had a couple of decent shots but before we knew it was 2-0, then 3-0. They killed off the game pretty quickly and then there was an error from me for the fourth.”
