What The Papers Say - 9 January

McCarthy, Alcaraz and Stones all under the media spotlight.

What The Papers Say - 9 January

James McCarthy has told Thursday's Liverpool Echo he is delighted both himself and Antolin Alcaraz have proved they are good enough to cut it among the league's elite.

The pair were part of the Wigan Athletic side that suffered relegation last term, but have already become popular in their short time at Everton, helping lift the Blues to within touching distance of the top four.

In the same paper, there's also an in-depth look at the unlikely pairing of 19-year-old Barnsley-born John Stones and Alcaraz, a Paraguay international 12 years his senior, in Martinez's rearguard.

On the transfer front, the Daily Mirror and Daily Mail both claim the Toffees are ready to sign Republic of Ireland winger Aiden McGeady from Spartak Moscow.

Recent evertontv interviews with Leighton Baines and Bryan Oviedo appear in the Daily Star, with the duo echoing each other's view that they can play in the same side.

And looking ahead to Tuesday's Youth Cup tie at Goodison Park, Under-18s boss Kevin Sheedy tells the Echo he has challenged his youngsters to reach the competition's latter stages.
