Antolin Alcaraz is intent on making up for lost time after debuting for Everton in Sunday's 2-1 win over Southampton.

Groin surgery and a subsequent period of rehabilitation meant that the former Wigan man, who signed on at Goodison in July, had to wait over five months before making his competitive Toffees bow.

But the Paraguay international seamlessly slotted into the Blues' defence against the Saints after being selected to fill the breach left by the injured Phil Jagielka.

Maximum points catapulted Roberto Martinez's side into the top four of the Premier League at the midpoint of the season.

For Alcaraz it was the perfect way to put his injury anguish behind him and finally kick-start his Everton career.

He told evertontv: "It's amazing after such a long time waiting, especially to win the game. I tried to do my best after watching for a long time from the stands. It went really well.

"It's really hard when you are behind the window watching everyone running and you can't do anything. It was very frustrating but it is finished now and the only thing I think about now is trying to enjoy the rest of the season."

Alcaraz's assured performance alongside Sylvain Distin drew plenty of plaudits.

He could now earn a second successive start in the New Year's Day trip to Stoke, with skipper Jagielka facing up to four weeks on the sidelines with a hamstring setback.

Alcaraz added: "It was easy in one way because I already had some [behind closed doors] games behind me and I tried to do things simple. It is always difficult when you have been waiting for a long time. But it went really well.

"From now on, hopefully I can play in a lot of games. There is still a lot of time left to enjoy this season. It's really good to push myself a little bit more."

The Blues are next at Goodison in the FA Cup third round when they tackle Queens Park Rangers next Saturday. Buy tickets online here and print them at home.
