Ross Barkley is once again the focus in the national newspapers today after Roberto Martinez told them the midfielder would not be allowed to leave Goodison Park in the January transfer window – not even for a world record fee.

The midfielder netted a stunning free-kick in Sunday's 2-1 win at Swansea City, taking his tally of goals for the season to three.

But while his eye-catching displays have led to media speculation that other clubs are keeping tabs on the 20-year-old, Martinez has told papers including the Daily Mirror, Daily Star and Daily Express that the academy product will be staying put on the Blue half of Merseyside.

The Express also reports that Hull City boss Steve Bruce has made a similar statement of intent regarding centre-back Curtis Davies, with Everton among the rumoured suitors for the 28-year-old former West Brom, Aston Villa and Birmingham man.

Elsewhere, the Liverpool Echo cover the news that Leighton Baines is set to return to the Toffees line-up for the visit of Sunderland on Boxing Day, while Martinez explains to the paper why he has been so impressed with Romelu Lukaku's all-round contribution this term.

The same paper also carry quotes from Swansea right-back Dwight Tiendalli, who says he left the Liberty Stadium on Sunday convinced Barkley should be World Cup-bound with England when the tournament takes place in Brazil next summer.

David LoganDo not sell Barkley or Baines to Man Utd. This club will only win things when it keeps its best players.
