Yak-Trick Sinks Cottagers
Classic highlights from another win over Fulham in 2007.
In December 2007, Fulham made the trip north to try and stop an Everton side that was aiming to go a tenth successive game without defeat.
With the current Blues team currently enjoying a similar run, we thought it fitting to look back on the excellent 3-0 win over the Cottagers from six years ago.
It was a game all about Yakubu as the Nigerian bagged a second-half hat-trick to sink the west London outfit.
The first half began and ended without much excitement and the teams returned to the dressing rooms on equal pegging.
The second period started in contrasting fashion with the opening goal materialising after just five minutes.
Yakubu’s first came about after Antti Niemi had parried Tim Cahill’s effort. The burly striker was unmarked and managed to get enough contact on the follow-up to find the unguarded net.
The Blues’ lead was doubled 10 minutes later in what was an obvious training ground move. Cahill’s corner was flicked on by Jagielka at the near post to the waiting Yakubu who powered a header home.
The Yak’s third and best goal of the game came courtesy of a Steven Pienaar pass. Latching onto the through ball and rounding Fulham’s last defender, he claimed his hat-trick with a curling shot into the bottom corner of Niemi’s goal.
