What The Papers Say - 9 December

Monday's newspapers are awash with match reports praising Everton's performance at the Emirates on Sunday.

The Blues were superb against Arsenal and earned no less than their efforts merited with a 1-1 draw in the closing stages.

And there was plenty of reaction from the Toffees camp too, with Tim Howard telling the Liverpool Echo that confidence has never been higher in his time at Goodison Park.

Phil Jagielka was full of praise for man of the match Ross Barkley after the final whistle, crediting the midfielder with 'keeping him young'.

Echo reporter Greg O'Keeffe's full-time report looks at how the Blues were dominant in passing and possession against the league-leaders.

And Roberto Martinez says that performance demonstrates exactly what his side are capable of.

The manager also comments on Barkley's dazzling display in the Independent, describing his youngster as 'unique' amid comparisons to Paul Gascoigne and Michael Ballack.

Former Gunners man Alan Smith admits he was impressed with James McCarthy's performance and analyses his early Everton form.

Meanwhile, the Daily Record link the Toffees with Icelandic striker Alfred Finnbogason, currently playing for Heerenveen, and Dundee United's young defender John Souttar.

Tony FitzWould love to see Sylvain extend his contract. Great pro. Great player. Absolutely solid at the back. Could easily keep going til' 40+. IMWT!!!
