Bellew: Everton Can Inspire Me

Blues fan set for his title fight with Adonis Stevenson.

Tony Bellew is on the verge of becoming the WBC light-heavyweight champion – but that won’t prevent him from following Everton’s game with Stoke City this weekend.

The diehard Evertonian goes toe-to-toe with Adonis Stevenson on Sunday morning, just hours after the Blues have been in Premier League action against the Potters.

Bellew, 30, is hoping that three points for Everton at Goodison can act as inspiration for a victory of his own in his title showdown in Quebec City.

However, the Bomber has warned his Canadian opponent to expect even more punishment if the Toffees don’t achieve the desired result against Mark Hughes’ outfit.

“I think the gaffer [my trainer] will try to keep me away from it but I will find out the score,” Bellew told evertontv last week before jetting out for his final fight preparations.

“I don’t think I will be able to connect to my Sky Go but I will be able to follow the game on Twitter. Listen, I’ll find a way - I have got to know the result. I’m sure one of the boys will text me, so I will know the score.

“It will be either one of two things – I’ll either be over the moon with a win but if we haven’t got the result that we want, he [Stevenson] will be getting an even worse hiding!”

Tony BellewBellew defeats Isaac Chilemba in May.

Bellew earned his title chance by defeating Isaac Chilemba on a unanimous points decision back in May.

Since then he has preparing for this weekend’s contest, often spending time training alongside Everton’s squad in the gym at Finch Farm.

“There’s great excitement and anticipation,” continued Bellew. “I wouldn’t say I have nerves, I’m just hugely excited.

“Boxers say the old clichés about how they are in the best shape of their lives, but the most important thing for me is that I’m happier now than I’ve been in any camp before.

“I do not have to go through one guy to get to the next one. I’m here now, I’m at the summit of the mountain and I’ve just got to take one step and I’m on top. That’s what I’m so pleased about - it’s mission complete once I beat Adonis Stevenson.

“It’s fantastic to have the support [of everyone at Everton]. Whenever I’m at Finch Farm I just feel like another one of the lads.

“When I come away from here and I go to see my friends we talk about Everton and they might say ‘I don’t like how he has been playing’. I get offended because it’s like they [the players] have become my friends.”

Blues fans can watch the fight live on Sky Sports 2 at approximately 2am on Sunday morning.

From everyone connected with Everton, good luck Tony. Bring the belt home!
