When Everton and Liverpool met at Goodison Park in December 1992 there was more at stake than usual.

It was the first Merseyside Derby since the formation of the Premier League - the first derby in a captivating revamped era of the game.

The Blues had beaten would-be champions Manchester United earlier in the campaign but went into the clash 19th in the table and struggling.

And a run of three games without a win looked set to continue when defender Mark Wright headed in from a corner to give the visitors the lead on 62 minutes.

Yet falling behind only served to galvanise Everton - and the advantage lasted just 60 seconds.

Midfielder Billy Kenny found Ian Snodin marauding forward down the right, and when he played the ball on to Mo Johnston, the striker turned and fired a shot which bobbled past goalkeeper Mike Hooper and in off the post.

That's the way it stayed until six minutes from time when two former Reds combined to win the game for the Toffees.

Peter Beardsley played a clever one-two with Gary Ablett on the edge of the box and adjusted his feet quickly to drill low past Hooper and into the bottom corner.

The strike sparked wild celebrations and moved Everton up to 17th in the new-look standings.

Howard Kendall's men would ultimately finish four points above the relegation zone in 13th but this derby win would remain a highlight of the inaugural Premier League campaign.

Tickets for this weekend's derby have long sold out but it's not too late to secure your seat for the visit of Stoke City on Saturday 30 November (3pm).

Kristian MollerMy first game at Goodison that. Not a bad one. Seem to remember Souness getting the boot the next morning, which was an added bonus.
