Jurgen Klinsmann has confirmed that Tim Howard will again captain the United States in their friendly with Scotland on Friday evening.

The Blues goalkeeper will wear the armband with regular skipper, Seattle Sounders’ Clint Dempsey, absent due to a calf injury.

It will be the fourth time this year that Howard has led the US after captaining his nation in games against Honduras, Bosnia & Herzegovina and most recently Jamaica last month.

At Hampden Park, Howard could line-up against his Everton teammate Steven Naismith, who is expected to play some part for Gordon Strachan’s side.

Friday’s friendly acts as crucial preparation for the US ahead of next summer’s World Cup, where Head Coach Klinsmann believes they can make an impression.

He said: “I’m in a role right now where I can guide the US team to a very exciting World Cup and our goal is to improve and get everyone on another level.

“A lot of our players over the last 10 to 15 years have stepped it up and have come over to Europe to play for good clubs, Tim included.

“They have proved that American soccer players can be extremely successful. It’s an exciting time and we want to continue to grow.”
