Duo Keane To Impress

Coleman and McCarthy eager to improve under new ROI management.

Duo Keane To Impress

Everton's Ireland duo Seamus Coleman and James McCarthy are looking forward to learning from new Republic of Ireland assistant manager Roy Keane.

The former Manchester United captain enjoyed a trophy-laden career as a player, but experienced mixed fortunes in his initial ventures into management.

Coupled with his infamous fall-out with the national team at the 2002 World Cup, Keane's appointment has been met with differing emotions.

Now appointed as Martin O'Neill's number two, the midfield hardman is sure to be an audible presence on the touchline - and Coleman is sure it can spur the side on.

The Blues right-back said: "Every single player has massive respect for him and we can learn from him.

"I haven't seen that [scary] side of him yet and hopefully I'll never be on the receiving end!

“I think everyone is excited. Everyone knows about Roy who was a fantastic player and someone we can all learn from, and Martin has been a fantastic manager so it's a brilliant appointment for Ireland.

"But in every job, with the assistant manager and manager, you have to have some kind of fear and respect for them, and we are no different.

"It's up to us now on the pitch to impress them."

McCarthy often operates in a similar midfield role to Keane and it's for that reason that the former Wigan man is pleased to now be working under him.

He added: "He’s a massive influence. We’ve only been together here a couple of days but he’s given us tips here and there. I’ll pick up as many things as I can from him.

“The little things he does are important. In yesterday’s training, we had 11-a-side game and he was talking to me. Making a run here, get on the ball — just advising that type of stuff. Every little helps.”

Alec WalkerI hope he doesn't alter the style Martinez wants from him.
