Baines Can't Wait For Derby

Leighton Baines is frustrated that Everton have to wait until the international break has passed before they can lock horns with rivals Liverpool.

The Merseyside derby can’t come quick enough for the defender who is keen for the Toffees to get back to winning ways after the successive stalemates with Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace.

However, Baines admits his impending England commitments will prevent him from becoming too involved in the extensive publicity leading into the 221st meeting between the clubs.

The 28-year-old, along with Blues teammates Phil Jagielka and Ross Barkley, has now linked-up with the Three Lions squad for the forthcoming friendlies against Chile and Germany.

“I think the best thing is to just get on with it,” Baines told evertontv when pressed on whether he believes the international fixtures have arrived at a good or bad time.

“It [the break] is not a bad thing by any means but when a derby is coming up everyone gets excited and you sort of want to get out there and play it.

“But we get to switch off from it from a certain extent because a lot of us are going away to play important games for our countries. We’ll then come back together and hopefully get a good result.”

Victory on 23 November would see the Toffees move level on points with Liverpool, potentially in joint second place in the Premier League standings.

To secure three points Baines knows that Everton must show more cutting edge in the final third than they did at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

“Another clean sheet takes us to six in 11 games which is a pretty decent ratio,” said Baines of Saturday’s draw in the capital. “We just lacked that bit of quality with the final cross or pass. A number of us just weren’t good enough.”

All seats may have been snapped-up for the derby – but tickets are still available for the home meeting with Stoke City on Saturday 30th November.
