Alan Stubbs was pleased that Everton Under-21s didn’t let their recent high standards slip in the 2-2 draw at St Mirren, despite the game only taking friendly status.

The Young Blues, who are five matches unbeaten in the league, have temporarily relocated to Scotland where they are halfway through a two-game mini-tour.

Frontmen Chris Long and Hallam Hope were both on the scoresheet in Monday’s highly competitive match which bore more resemblance to a competitive fixture than a behind-closed-doors bounce game.

The Blues trailed at half-time, then grabbed a 2-1 lead before conceding an equaliser from the penalty spot two minutes before full-time.

Stubbs told evertontv: “I thought the lads played really well at times. I thought we should have won the game but the result is not necessarily the most important thing, it’s the performances.

“I’ve got to say the performances over the last two months have been very good and today was no exception. The way we conceded our two goals, I’m not happy about - but overall there were some positive signs, so I’m pleased.”

Stubbs revealed his reasons for taking his squad north of the border, where they will also face Kilmarnock in another friendly on Thursday afternoon.

“We’ve got a free month in November [in the league] so it was a chance for us to get away somewhere different rather than be at Finch Farm for the whole of the month with no games,” he added.

“It was an opportunity to come to Scotland to get two games within the space of a few days so from an exercise point of view the game was good for us. It was a good test.”

The second string are next in competitive action against Middlesbrough in Under-21 Premier League Cup on Monday 18 November. More information on the fixture can be obtained by clicking here.
