Ossie Still Has England Ambitions
Midfielder wants to add to his two international caps.
Saturday’s matchwinner Leon Osman has not given up hope of an England recall.
In front of watching Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson, the midfielder produced a sparkling second-half cameo to help Everton record a fifth Premier League victory of the season at Villa Park.
Osman, a 60th-minute substitute, created one goal and scored the other after Tim Howard’s superb early penalty save from Christian Benteke.
Last season Osman was in arguably the form of his career and at the age of 31 was rewarded with a first England cap against Sweden last November.
He followed this up with another appearance in the 8-0 World Cup qualifying win over San Marino in March, but has been overlooked for selection by Hodgson since.
“I couldn’t have asked for much more,” said Osman. “I was involved in the first goal and I scored the second, so it’s pleasing when games go like that.
“I didn’t know Roy Hodgson was here. I was concentrating on the match.
“Obviously, I’m English and I’m still wanting to play. If the call came I’d be delighted but I’m not going to get too carried away with things that aren’t taking place on the pitch.
“I’ve got two caps. I wouldn’t say I’d be satisfied to finish with that because you want to get as many as you can. I’m still playing in the top flight and there’s a big competition coming in the summer, so if there’s a chance for you to go then you try and take it.”
Victory over Aston Villa temporarily lifted Everton to third place in the Premier League table before ending the weekend in sixth.
And another three points next weekend against Tottenham Hotspur would see the Blues leapfrog the big-spending North London outfit.
Osman continued: “We are confident. We're concentrating on each game as it comes. We're certainly full of confidence, we are not fearing anyone and we're enjoying our football so it's good to be Everton at the minute.”
