Everton legend Graeme Sharp believes Blues defender Phil Jagielka has earned the right to start for England at next summer's World Cup in Brazil.

Jagielka helped Roy Hodgson's side secure the two victories they needed to guarantee a finals spot last week, playing the full 90 minutes against both Montenegro and Poland.

In total, the 31-year-old appeared in seven of the Three Lions' 10 qualifiers as they topped Group H undefeated.

Hodgson's men also conceded the second fewest number of goals in the European zone, scoring 31 and shipping just four.

"Obviously everyone was talking about Rio Ferdinand and John Terry in years gone by and, though he's had to be patient, I think Jags has not put a foot wrong and he's shown what he is, which is a very good defender, and his partnership with [Gary] Cahill looks quite promising," said Sharp.

"The London press are suggesting they want different options going towards Brazil but I think Jags has done more than enough.

"Obviously he'll be wanting to maintain his form for Everton but in no way does he look out of place in the England set up."
