What The Papers Say - 2 October

Jags avoids Lukaku in training, plus McCarthy's love of Goodison.

What The Papers Say - 2 October

Romelu Lukaku is such a handful, Everton skipper Phil Jagielka goes out of his way to avoid him in training.

That's what the England defender has told many of Wednesday's national newspapers following the Belgian's two-goal performance in Monday's 3-2 win over Newcastle.

The Daily Mirror, Daily Star and Daily Express all carry the story, in which Jagielka claims Lukaku has the power to spur his new side on to great things this season.

Jagielka also says he understands why the 20-year-old hitman has so often been compared to former Chelsea star and one-time teammate Didier Drogba.

In the Liverpool Echo, James McCarthy talks of his delight at making his full home debut against the Magpies.

The former Hamilton and Wigan midfielder mentions his boyhood dream of running out at a stadium like Goodison Park and says Monday's atmosphere has left him desperate for more.

In the same paper, Lukaku says he is proud of his start at Everton and vows to continue working hard for his spoils.

In light of his goalscoring home debut, the Echo look at past players who have also achieved the feat, including Tony Cottee, Duncan Ferguson, Fred Pickering and Gary Speed.

John HoldenThey were great in the first half, But. Very scary in the second.we have got to keep the pressure up for 90 mins.
