Don Donovan Passes Away

Sad news of the passing of former Blues star.

Don Donovan Passes Away

Don Donovan, who appeared 187 times for Everton, has passed away at the age of 83.

Donovan's passing means that there are now no survivors from the team that defeated Oldham Athletic 4-0 in April 1954 to secure promotion for Everton back to the top-flight.

Donovan was born in Cork, Ireland, in December 1929 and joined Everton from Irish junior football.

He made his Toffees debut in August 1952 in a 3-3 draw against Sheffield Wednesday at Goodison Park.  Ted Sagar, Harry Catterick and TE Jones were in the Everton line-up that day as the Blues played their third game of the season in Division Two after being relegated at the end of the previous season.

Donovan was then a fairly regular fixture for the first-team up until his final match for the club against Manchester City at Goodison in April 1958, by which time he was a full international with 5 caps for Republic of Ireland.

He was an ever-present in that successful 1953/54 campaign when Everton finished second to Leicester City in the Division Two table.

Donovan scored two goals for Everton - against Sheffield United at Goodison in March 1956 and then at Old Trafford in October of the same year when the Toffees beat Manchester United 5-2.

He left Everton in the summer of 1958 to join Grimsby Town where he became something of a legend, playing over 250 games before leaving to manage Boston United.

His son, Terry, was also a professional footballer who played and scored for Aston Villa during the early rounds of their winning European Cup campaign of 1981/82.

Don Donovan died on 26 September after a long illness and the sympathy of everyone at Everton is extended to all his family and many friends.
