Romelu Lukaku helped changed the complexion of Saturday's victory over West Ham.

That is the verdict of manager Roberto Martinez, who was delighted with the impact the 20-year-old Belgian international made as a second-half substitute at Upton Park.

He headed the 85th-minute winner as Everton came from behind twice to secure a memorable 3-2 win.

Martinez said: "He helped change the complexion of the game. If you look at the two West Ham centre-halves - James Collins and Winston Reid - they are very experienced with great physicality.

"But the way he handled them was a joy to watch for 45 minutes. The amount of chances he had against a team who were very well organised speaks volumes for him.

"He is a young striker who has very many technical strengths but it is also good to see those old-fashioned attributes. His bravery for the goal, putting his head in where it hurts, that was the difference between getting three points and one point.

"He felt the pain and he didn't know he had scored. It wasn't an easy game for him to come into but I thought his movement occupied the two centre-halves all the time and gave other players space.

"It was a very unselfish performance and he gave us an extra two points."

The manager has been impressed by the hitman since his arrival from Chelsea on transfer deadline day.

He added: "He is a very intelligent footballer and I want him to carry on enjoying his football and going from strength to strength. I hope he was disappointed not to start because I want and expect that hunger from the players."
