Boss tipping Jelavic to rediscover goalscoring touch.
Everton manager Roberto Martinez is confident that striker Nikica Jelavic can end his Premier League goalscoring drought - starting this weekend against Chelsea.
The Croatian international netted seven league goals last campaign, with his last strike sealing a famous 2-0 win over title contenders Manchester City back in March.
Jelavic enjoyed a successful pre-season campaign, hitting the target four times, though he is yet to find the net in the Club’s first three league games of the season.
Martinez believes the 28-year-old is more than capable of regaining his form in front of goal but admitted that the team need to improve their play in the final third.
He said: “He’s [Jelavic] is in the right frame of mind. He’s worked extremely hard for the team.
“Now we have good competition for that role with Arouna Kone, Romelu Lukaku and Nikica and I couldn’t be happier with the strikers of that calibre.
“When you don’t score goals the first thing you think about is have we created enough and clearly then it becomes a big problem. If you haven’t got the threat in the final third then that’s a problem.
“That’s not the case for us because you look at the amount of corners and good opportunities we’ve had, it’s just a matter of working at that play in the final third.”
The Blues were boosted by the arrival of Lukaku on the final day of the transfer window after Chelsea decided that the striker would benefit from another season of regular first team football.
Martinez is excited by the competition he now has in attack - and he believes his latest signing could be the man to bring the best out of Jelavic.
He added: “Any top player helps the squad in general. Romelu is a real exciting signing for us as he’s young, powerful, strong and very clever with his movement and he’s also a clinical finisher with both feet. I don’t think you will see many better strikers around Europe than Romelu.
“It’s good for the team, it’s good for Niki and it’s also good for Arouna even though they are competing against each other for that number nine shirt.”
