Thursday’s papers report that Everton are planning to open contract talks with Leighton Baines.

The left-back was the subject of interest from Manchester United during the transfer window, and the Times, Daily Telegraph and Daily Express state the Blues are set to offer the England man new terms to deter further interest from the Old Trafford club in January.

The Daily Mirror features quotes from deadline day signing Romelu Lukaku who has revealed just how frantic the final few hours of the transfer window were from his perspective.

The Daily Star also reports on Lukaku’s late move to Goodison Park and the influence that Belgium teammate Kevin Mirallas had on him making the loan switch to Merseyside.

Locally, Roberto Martinez has been speaking to the Liverpool Echo about how John Stones is the most promising young defender in England.

In the Liverpool Daily Post, the defender says he is taking inspiration from Ross Barkley’s rise to prominence at the start of the new season.

Martinez has also told the Echo that the Everton fans will be seeing a lot more of youngster Gerard Deulofeu once he fully acclimatises to life with the Toffees.
