James McCarthy has targeted European football with Everton following his deadline day switch to Goodison.

The 22-year-old Republic of Ireland international was signed in a deal worth £15m from Wigan Athletic minutes before the closure of the transfer window on Monday evening.

McCarthy, who admits he was 'over the moon' when he learned of Everton's interest, has agreed a long-term deal with the Blues and has set his sights on a top six finish in his first season at the Club.

McCarthy told evertontv: "I was sitting at home and obviously there were phone calls. Once I knew that Everton were interested there was no going back – I wanted to come here, establish myself and get some games under my belt. To be honest, I was speechless and I’m just delighted to be here.

"I think as a club its got everything going for it. I think we can push top-six at least."

The lure of working with Roberto Martinez was also a huge factor for the Glaswegian.

He added: "I worked under him for four years at Wigan. They were four brilliant years to be honest and I loved every minute of it. All his coaching staff are here and there are a good bunch of boys [in the squad] because I know a few of them. It was a no-brainer to be honest. I’m delighted to get it all over.

"He’s told me to come here and work hard. I’m not guaranteed my place – rightly so – but I will come here and give it my best shot.

"I’m over the moon. I’m just delighted to be here now."

McCarthy's move to Goodison follows a successful four year spell at the DW Stadium where he racked up 120 appearances, netting seven goals.

He began his career north of the border with Hamilton Academicals, making his debut a day before his 16th birthday and going on to play 95 times for the club.

He was named the SFA Young Player of the Season in 2008-09 before his switch to Wigan.

McCarthy is a Republic of Ireland international, qualifying thanks to his grandparents. He made his senior debut in 2010 and has earned 16 caps for Giovanni Trapattoni's side.

McCarthy and Gareth Barry could make their Blues debut in Everton's next home fixture against Chelsea.
