England Call Boosts Barkley
Midfielder determined to enjoy his Three Lions experience.
Ross Barkley is convinced the experience of training alongside established international players will significantly benefit his ever-improving game.
Barkley’s emergence at the start of the new Premier League season has been much discussed, with the 19-year-old’s performances throughout the opening month of the campaign resulting in a first ever call up to the senior England squad.
He linked up with Roy Hodgson’s group at St George’s Park at the start of the week as the Three Lions began preparations for their World Cup qualifying double-header against Moldova and Ukraine.
The midfielder admits he was elated to learn of his inclusion in the squad – and is determined to enjoy the opportunity that has fallen his way.
Barkley told evertontv: “When the gaffer told me I was over the moon. It was the best feeling ever. To get called up to your country’s senior side, there is nothing better that can happen.
“Being around all top-class players like Phil Jagielka and Frank Lampard and learning from them all [can help my game].
“I think it will be a good experience being around players like that.”
Barkley could make his England debut on Friday evening against Moldova, although he hasn’t allowed himself to get too carried away with the prospect of playing at a packed out Wembley Stadium.
“I’m humble about it and hopefully I do get a cap - and then plenty more in the future,” he continued.
“It’s been a positive start to the season and I’m hoping to push on and do better as the season goes on.”
