The Blues' coverage in the morning papers.

What The Papers Say - 18 August

Amongst the match reports from Everton’s season opener against Norwich City, there are a couple of references to the Blues in the morning’s papers today.

Ross Barkley’s first Toffees goal is one of the highlights of each of those reports but it’s Seamus Coleman’s strike that fully demonstrated the change in approach under Roberto Martinez.

Neat and tidy possession-based football allowed Everton to pull the Canaries’ defence this way and that and when Leighton Baines and Steven Pienaar conspired to set up Nikica Jelavic, the Croatian’s shot was palmed straight into the path of the right back, who couldn’t miss from six yards.

The goal is perfectly captured in a graphic within the Daily Mail report which shows how all but – perhaps ironically given his impact on the match – Barkley had a hand in creating the chance for the Republic of Ireland cap.

Elsewhere, the Daily Express again links us with Gareth Barry with the paper claiming that it will cover the ‘odds-on’ loss of Marouane Fellaini. The Daily Star, however, links Everton with Wigan midfielder James McCarthy instead.

The Belgian himself is the subject of speculation in the Daily Mirror.

With many high profile transfer sagas on the go, the Guardian carries a piece on left-back Baines and his professionalism and character in dealing with the rumours of possible bid for his services from Manchester United.

Derek PriceWe should not sell Baines or Fellaini.

Joel CurranSky says £28 million double bid for Fellaini and Baines has been rejected.. if they ever consider selling them, it must be at least £40 million plus a player. I for one, hope they don't!
