While Roberto Martinez felt his first competitive match as Everton manager was a ‘special moment’, he insists there is plenty still to do after the Blues drew 2-2 with Norwich City.

Speaking to evertontv following the final whistle, the Spaniard admitted he enjoyed the occasion but added it would serve as nothing more than a platform from which to build, with plenty of positives to take away from his first 90 minutes.

Goals from Ross Barkley and Seamus Coleman highlighted the change in approach under the former Wigan manager, and the performance – if not the result – meant it was a memorable day for Martinez.

“I’m extremely proud and it was a special moment,” he said. “It is a real privilege to be the manager at Everton.

“When you get the support that we had at Carrow Road, you realise what a special football club we have got. Then you see the performance of the players and you can be very proud as an Evertonian.

“So it has been a great start but there is a long way to go.”

It so nearly became the perfect start for Martinez, with Coleman’s goal looking like giving him a winning start to his Toffees reign, only for a huge slice of luck to hand the Canaries an equaliser, as Steven Whittaker’s sliced effort fell perfectly for Ricky Van Wolfswinkel.

However, Martinez saw enough to be pleased about. “I think we deserved to win the game,” reflected the Blues boss.

“When you go 1-0 down, obviously the home side should have good momentum after that but I thought we turned that round really well. We got ourselves in front and form that point on I thought we were the team that was more in control.

“Their two goals came out of nothing really, and that is a disappointment.

“Even right at the end we had a chance with Steven Naismith and that would have been a deserved three points. But sometimes in football you don’t get what you deserve.

“However if we keep applying ourselves in the manner that we did against Norwich, we will keep growing, keep getting better, and the points will come.”
