To kick off the new era, Darron Gibson lends his services as Issue One’s cover star. Inside, the midfield general explains how he cannot wait for the new season to begin, knowing it could have been all so different.

In an exclusive interview, Gibson recounts his time on loan at both Royal Antwerp in Belgium and here in England with Wolves – two spells that served as the ‘reality check’ he admits he needed to become a regular Premier League star.

“I moved from Ireland to England when I was 15 and I didn’t find that too bad. But I found it quite hard to move from Manchester to Antwerp,” he told Everton. “At the start I think the lads there at Antwerp felt a bit threatened and there were a few heavy tackles and a few fights in training!
Eventually we got over it and they were a great bunch of lads to be fair.”

Elsewhere in this first edition, Scottish international Steven Naismith answers YOUR Twitter questions, covering topics from his forgotten hat-trick in Tony Hibbert’s testimonial, to his best friend in football.

Joining him is Victor Anichebe, who reveals how the standards he set last season will help drive him on to ensure it’s he who starts the new campaign as Roberto Martinez’s leading man up front.

Phil Jagielka then helps launch a brand new feature in which he tells us the five key characters who have helped shape his professional football career.

There is also enough room to squeeze in James Beattie, Paul Lodge, Richard Evans, Nikica Jelavic, Tony Bellew, Hayley McQueen and, of course, Roberto Martinez himself!

A lot of hard work and preparation went on at Goodison during the summer ahead of the new season launch and Everton editor Darren Griffiths is delighted with the finished product.

He said: “The new, exciting and vibrant magazine reflects the feel-good factor that currently exists at the football club. The Evertonian served us remarkably well over the years but as we enter a new era at Goodison, we feel that the time is right for a change and we’ve raised the quality bar even higher with the new Everton publication.

“I am confident that it will be very well-received by our supporters and, as with everything here at the Club, I welcome all forms of feedback.”

Price at £3.50, the first issue is on sale now in all usual local retailers, as well as online here. Annual subscriptions are also available here.
