'Cheeky' Stones Earns Distin's Praise
Frenchman says young defender has the right mentality.
Audacious he may be, but Sylvain Distin says it's John Stones' grounded nature that will help him fulfil his burgeoning talent.
Stones was the talk of San Francisco after netting a cheeky chipped penalty against Italian champions Juventus in the International Champions Cup on Thursday morning.
An eye-catching display over 90 minutes also drew no shortage of plaudits as the Blues forced a 1-1 draw before edging the contest in a shootout.
And speaking about his teenage teammate, veteran Distin told evertontv: "I think he had a great game. I saw him a bit last season because he started training with us and I thought already he had shown some good qualities. And today I think he confirmed that.
"He's got a bright future if he carries on like that. He's got the right mentality as well, which is very, very important - nearly as important as the football quality.
"You need to be focused and have the right mentality and that's what he's got."
The penalty - often referred to as the Panenka after the Czech footballer who famously dinked his nation to victory over Germany in the 1976 European Championships - was the highlight of a gripping finale.
But Distin jokingly added: "He [Stones] is a good footballer and a bit cheeky as well, which is nice.
"But it's good for him that he scored because if not he'd have definitely been in trouble!"
