Ladies Heading Home
Everton's Lionesses unable to prevent Euro 2013 elimination.
Everton Ladies' England hopefuls are heading home after crashing out of Euro 2013 on Thursday evening.
The Lionesses went into their final group game against France knowing that a win would see them through into the next round of the competition.
However, England were unable to carve out any real chances against the classy French side, who finished top of the group after a comfortable 3-0 win.
Everton’s Toni Duggan had been handed her first start of the tournament after her goalscoring heroics in the previous match against Russia, but even she was unable to prevent defeat.
France hit the post early on through Eugenie Le Sommer, but minutes later the Lyon forward went one better beating Lincoln Ladies goalkeeper Karen Bardsley with a tidy finish.
Jill Scott emerged from the bench as Hope Powell looked to get her side back in the game but two Les Bleus goals in three minutes to kill off any hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the competition.
With just over an hour gone, Louisa Necib fired into the top corner to double France’s lead before she turned provider as her whipped cross found Wendie Renard who headed home from 12 yards.
England travelled to Sweden on an 11-game unbeaten streak, but their performances in the competition failed to live up to the billing that saw them listed as fourth favourites for the Euro 2013 crown.
