'Tim Will Enjoy Competition'
Coach Bergara expects American to relish Joel rivalry.
Everton goalkeeping coach Inaki Bergara believes Tim Howard will relish the challenge presented by new boy Joel Robles.
The Spanish Under-21 international arrived at the Club from Atletico Madrid last Monday, following Bergara, whose own switch from Wigan had been confirmed the previous week.
The pair worked together during the youngster’s loan spell at the DW Stadium last term and Bergara insists Howard will be buoyed by having a fresh-faced pretender around the Finch Farm training ground.
“Tim will be happy because another guy is pushing him,” the 51-year-old told evertonfc.com. “Tim is a big name in this team but Joel’s arrival puts him under pressure to keep pushing and fighting and to keep clean sheets, so he will be happy to be able to compete with someone.
“Joel is a good signing, he is very young and he has lots of potential.
“I am very happy to coach him and Tim and they can have a good competition for the goalkeeper’s position.”
Howard is set to return to pre-season training on Thursday and Bergara added: “I have a lot of respect for Tim and I am excited about working with him.
“He has a new situation with the new manager and I think he will be excited to work with Roberto and all the new staff.
“We need him to stay fit, work hard and carry on doing good, intelligent work.”
