Young Blues Start With Draw In Sweden

Kevin Sheedy’s U18s kick off their Gothia Cup campaign.

Young Blues Start With Draw In Sweden

Kevin Sheedy and Duncan Ferguson have taken an Everton side out to the Gothia Cup in Sweden.

The tournament, dubbed the 'Youth World Cup', kicked off on Monday, with the Blues' Under-18s earning a 1-1 draw against Gefle IF.

First-year scholar Harry Charsley opened the scoring on 18 minutes, before a late leveller denied the Toffees all three points in Group One.

"We started off very well," Sheedy told evertonfc.com at the final whistle.

"But we had to give everyone a game and made a lot of changes in the second half. That made us a little disjointed and we had some great chances to win 2-0 or 3-0. We didn't take them and they had one shot at the end and scored from it.

"We're disappointed with the result and want to progress and do as well as we can but it's more a matter of getting everyone up to speed.

"All the games are on astroturf this year, which is a bit new for our lads. The stadiums with grass pitches are all in use by the Women's European Championships. That'll be a test for our players, but it'll be a great experience for the players following a week of hard training in Austria."

On the tournament itself, the Everton legend is delighted to be involved and has already been scouting potential opposition.

"It's the first time we've been invited here," Sheedy added. "It's been going five years and it's a massive tournament encorporating all age groups. The whole city of Gothenburg is taken over with all the games live on TV and everyone supporting.

"Duncan and myself have watched a few games - there were teams from Ghana and Uganda who look very good. The standard here looks very positive - there's teams from Mexico and the likes of River Plate from Argentina."

Everton Under-18s have further group games on Tuesday and Wednesday. Keep an eye on evertonfc.com for more updates and reaction.

Victor AnderssonWelcome to Europes finest country dear fellow Evertonians and good luck in tournament.
