Trio Set For Women's Euros
Scott, Brown and Duggan ready for England's opener against Spain.
England’s 2013 UEFA Women’s Championship campaign is set to get underway - and three of Everton Ladies’ squad are looking to get in on the action.
Rachel Brown, Jill Scott and Toni Duggan were all named in Hope Powell’s England squad in June and will aim to get the Three Lions off to a positive start when they take on Spain in their Group C opener on Friday (7.30pm kick-off, BST).
Amazingly, for Blues’ stopper Brown it is her sixth major tournament and midfielder Scott also has previous experience of an international tournament.
However, for 21-year-old Duggan this will be her maiden senior international competition, though she did help England to victory in the 2009 European Under-19 Championship, netting the opening goal in the 2-0 final victory over Sweden.
Friday’s encounter against Spain comes before Powell’s side take on Russia on Monday 15 July, and then France on Thursday 18 July.
The last time the two sides faced each other was when they were paired together in Group 5 of the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup qualification stage. England finished top of the group defeating Spain 1-0 at The Den along the way as well as securing a 2-2 draw away against the Spaniards.
More recently, the Lionesses suffered their first defeat in over a year when they lost 4-1 to tournament hosts Sweden in their warm-up friendly last week. Their Spanish counterparts have a similar record, having suffered just the one defeat in their last seven fixtures.
England have never won a major international tournament, coming closest to lifting a trophy in the previous Women’s Championship in 2009 when they were beaten 6-2 by Germany in the final.
