Martinez: Alcaraz In His Prime
Boss says defender is an 'important addition' to Everton's squad.
Antolin Alcaraz is joining Everton at the peak of his powers, according to Roberto Martinez.
The Blues boss has welcomed the capture of the Paraguay international, declaring it as the ‘perfect moment’ for the defender to move to Goodison Park.
Alcaraz, who arrives on Merseyside following three years at Wigan, plied his trade in the Argentine, Portuguese and Belgian top divisions before making the switch to English football.
The 30-year-old played - and scored - at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and helped his nation reach the final of the Copa America the following year.
With the centre-half signing on a free transfer, Martinez believes his second recruit as Everton manager represents an astute piece of business.
“Antolin is a very experienced footballer,” Martinez told evertontv.
“He's someone that has been enjoying football in Belgium, he's had a spell in Portugal and very good experiences at international level with Paraguay.
“He comes in a perfect moment after three seasons in the Premier League.
“At his age, he is a commanding figure, a real leader within himself with really high standards.”
In addition to his on-the-field attributes, Martinez is confident that Alcaraz’s personality will allow him to make a seamless transition into Everton’s squad of players.
“He's someone who is going to fit in extremely well with what we have in our dressing room,” added Martinez.
“He's an exciting prospect and we've been fortunate enough to get him at the end of his contract so as a free transfer, he's going to be a very important addition at the back.”
