Joe Royle is optimistic that Roberto Martinez can bring silverware to Goodison Park and take away a tag he no longer wants to his name.

Having tasted FA Cup final disappointment in 1968 as an Everton player, Club legend Royle went one better by lifting the trophy as Blues manager in 1995 when Paul Rideout’s famous goal toppled Manchester United.

Martinez arrives on Merseyside with the same crown inked on his resume after Wigan Athletic’s stunning victory over Manchester City at Wembley in May.

Royle is hopeful that the Spaniard can repeat this feat with Everton and add another trophy to the Club’s cabinet after a 19-year wait.

“Roberto comes into the job with a trophy under his arm, which is nice. It’s an exciting time,” explained Royle in an evertontv exclusive.

“I’m constantly referred to as Everton’s last manager to win a trophy and I’m fed up with it. Please Roberto, take it away from me – I’d love you to win a trophy.”

A born-and-bred Blueblood, Royle believes that Martinez now holds the ‘best’ job in football and won’t be fazed by the task that lies ahead of him.

“The Everton job is the pinnacle,” added the former number nine. “He’s done a good job at Wigan – they won the FA Cup and played attractive football – but getting the Everton job is a great thing.

“He will have known David [Moyes] and the standards he set, the professionalism and the way that Everton like to play so he won’t be daunted. There would be no point applying for the job had he been daunted.

“He was always on the shortlist – I know from that speaking to Bill [Kenwright] – and he has come through.

“Good luck Roberto, all the Blues are with you. It’s not an easy job, but it’s the best job.”

Fenny FenstaGreat to hear Joe talking about Everton. Would love this to be a regular feature on the website. A true gentleman and EFC Legend.
