John Stones is convinced that England can progress to the knockout stage of the Under-20s World Cup.

The Everton defender played the full 90 minutes for the Young Lions in their 1-1 draw with Chile on Wednesday afternoon.

With two points to their name so far, England know a win against Egypt in the final group game will definitely ensure progression to the last-16 stage.

A defeat in Bursa, however, would see England make an early exit from the tournament, while a draw would mean an anxious wait to see if they have secured one of the four best third-place finishes from the six groups.

“We go there looking for three points, that’s in our minds,” Stones told FATV.

“We just want to get there now, get settled and I’m sure we’ll do well.”

Stones was an unused substitute in England’s opening group game – a 2-2 draw with Iraq on Sunday – but was handed a start at right-back by coach Peter Taylor against Chile.

The 19-year-old was content with his own performance and believes the result was a point gained rather than two dropped.

“I’m over the moon with it, I couldn’t have asked for much more really,” added the former Barnsley man.

“We could have won but we’re really happy with a point. We haven’t lost yet and we can build on it.

“We should have buried it at the end, but that’s football for you.

Speaking about the opportunity to play in a Word Cup, Stones added: “It’s such a big experience coming to another country to play different teams with different styles.

“We’re so used to playing English teams in England, but this is a big difference really.

“It’s a big learning curve for me and all of the lads.”
