Pair Feature In England Draw
Scott and Duggan involved in Euro 2013 warm-up match.
England Women’s preparations for Euro 2013 gained momentum with a very creditable 1-1 draw against reigning world champions Japan in the first of two warm-up matches.
Everton Ladies duo Jill Scott and Toni Duggan both featured in the friendly, held at Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium, as England were unfortunate to only draw.
Scott, who completed the full 90 minutes, was instrumental in England’s goal just minutes before half-time.
The midfielder found Rachel Yankey – winning her record-breaking 126th cap, eclipsing Peter Shilton’s record – and the Arsenal winger’s incisive pass was confidently tucked home by the lively Eni Aluko.
Anita Asante had a glorious opportunity to extend the lead but fired wide and on 76 minutes England would rue that missed chance.
Liverpool’s Fara Williams gave the ball away to Shinobu Ohno and when she played in Nahomi Kawasumi, the striker calmly rolled the ball under Karen Bardsley to level.
On came Duggan after 81 minutes to try and earn victory and she very nearly provided it. In swung a free-kick from wide on the left, the Blues striker flicked it on and there was Lucy Bronze to tap it in to seemingly give England the lead once more.
But the referee had other ideas and had already flagged Jess Clarke offside.
England will now head off to Sweden and will play the hosts in their second tune-up game before taking on Spain in their opening Euro 2013 group fixture on Friday 12 July.
