Leighton Baines says he is eager to get to grips with what he expects to be an exciting new approach under incoming manager Roberto Martinez.

Baines spoke with Martinez last week about the Spaniard’s ideas and vision for the immediate future, a conversation that left the full-back enthused for the start of the coming campaign.

The England international believes the 39-year-old's footballing philosophy is well suited to Everton’s current crop of stars and is backing the Blues to make forward strides under their new boss.

”Straight from the off he was one of the first names linked with the job and your feeling straight away was that he'd be a great appointment,” said Baines in an exclusive interview with evertontv. “He's got a different style than the one we've been used to in [terms] of his play, but I think it's progressive and it will move us forward.

“We've got good players here at the Club who could probably execute the style of play better than the players he's worked with before, without being disrespectful to them, and I think it's exciting for the players as well to be able to try that now.

”We've got time to work on it and it's great that the appointment's been made early. Whether it's just a different style of play or whether the formation's going to change, we've got plenty of time to work on the training ground, we'll be in morning and afternoons, so by the time we kick the first ball of the season we'll be well versed in whatever it is he wants us to do.

”We had a chat on the phone last week about the start of the season, looking forward to getting back and looking forward to working with each other and things like that.

“Anyone you speak to only says great things about him, as a manager and as a person as well, so that's all positive. It's exciting times now for him and for us to start looking forward to working with each other.”

Martinez has already stated his wish to bring in fresh faces at Goodison Park, saying he intends to act quickly to identify potential targets.

Baines is looking forward to welcoming any new additions to the squad and agrees some swift work in the transfer market would be best in terms of the team’s pre-season preparations.

“I'm sure the manager will have identified his targets now, people who he wants to bring in, and I think all managers like to get their business done early if possible,” he said. “It's a stressful time for managers, the transfer window, so if we can get them in, it's better for the team.

”It doesn't always work out that way but hopefully the manager, if he has identified players, he'll get the ones he wants and we can all start working together.”
