Everton 1-0 Manchester United - 20 August 2012
Last August, Everton recorded their first opening day win in five years with a tremendous performance against champions-elect Manchester United.
The Red Devils, who had missed out on the title to fierce rivals Manchester City the previous season, struggled to deal with the physicality of Marouane Fellaini, who capped a dominant display with a second-half headed winner.
In front of a packed Goodison on a warm summer’s evening, the Blues had started brightly with David De Gea making a number of saves from Steven Pienaar, Leon Osman and Leighton Baines.
The pressure on the United goal finally told 12 minutes after the restart when the influential Fellaini rose highest inside the area to head home Darron Gibson’s corner and secure all three points.
