Since his arrival in 1995, British football has found a place in the heart of Roberto Martinez.

Having learnt his trade at Real Zaragoza, Martinez, a young midfielder, was snapped up by Wigan as part of the ‘Three Amigos’, a trio of Spaniards who were thrust into the rigours of English football's fourth tier.

Martinez thrived. His success lead to further spells at Motherwell, Walsall and Swansea City - where he would begin his managerial career. It means the 39-year-old is well-versed in not just the English, but the British game - as he explained when he described it as the best type of football on the planet.

Speaking to evertontv, he said: “I think it's the passion for the game that we have here - I don't think we have that in any other country.

“There are always aspects that are fascinating in any part of the world where football is played, but a combination of that passion, the way the game is lived and the way that we have a real mixture of styles and ways of playing. For me, that is fascinating.

“That's probably why I've never wanted to be away from football here from the moment that I arrived in 1995. The British game is a real reference in world football and I always encourage everyone to try it and experiment here because it is unique.”

Martinez will enjoy his first taste of his new home within the British game when he steps out at Goodison Park for the first time against West Brom on 24 August.

He believes the remarkable atmosphere generated by fans will once again help Everton achieve their goals in the coming campaign.

“It’s going to be special,” he said. “I do feel Goodison Park plays a massive part in the running of the team and the results of the team.

“As always it is about the players and about them developing that enjoyment of representing their football club and making sure the fans are right behind them. That way we can become a very strong team and enjoy our football.”
