Classic Openers: 1996/97
We recall some memorable campaign curtain-raisers.
Everton 2-0 Newcastle United - 17 August 1996
Joe Royle’s men produced a shock on the opening day of the 1996-97 season against title-chasing Newcastle.
The Toon Army had narrowly lost out in the championship race to Manchester United in May and had bolstered their squad with the world-record transfer of Alan Shearer for £15million ready for another challenge.
In the end it was Everton striker Duncan Ferguson who had the final say, creating both goals as the Blues started the season in top form.
The Scot was fouled by Steve Watson in the area with David Unsworth stepping up to score the opening goal from the penalty spot. Gary Speed then marked his debut with a goal as he got on the end of Ferguson’s flick to seal the points.
