New Pitch Progressing Well

The installation of a brand new playing surface at Goodison Park is currently making good progress ahead of the new season.

This summer Everton have decided to invest in the Desso Grassmaster system which will ensure Goodison is home to one of the finest pitches in the Premier League.

Head groundsman Bob Lennon is overseeing the project and he told evertontv he’s pleased with how the project has gone so far.

“This is the biggest project we’ve had at Goodison Park in its history,” he declared.

“We have re-seeded the pitch with a natural grass and left it for a few days to let the grass germinate and grow.

“Then we brought the Desso Grassmaster system in which injects eight inch polypropylene fibres into the pitch.

“It takes about 20 hours to do one small section at a time and then three weeks to finish the whole pitch,” he added.

While the whole process is time consuming, only a very small percentage of the pitch will be made up of the artificial polypropylene fibres.

“It’s seven per cent on the main playing surface but on the touchline, goalkeeper warm-up areas and the high intensity shuttle areas we’ve gone to double, so that will be about 14-20 per cent.”

Every season the ground staff go through the rigorous process of replacing the turf to make sure it is in top condition come August, but this year represents the biggest assignment that the stadium has ever seen.

“Because we’ve got so many games and important fixtures now we thought we would have a decent pitch and that’s why we class it as the Rolls-Royce of pitches.”

Victor TayGreat job as we are going to get a good pitch to play in. It's important especially as Roberto loves to play passing football.
