Everton are linked with a double transfer swoop in Wednesday’s newspapers.

The Daily Mirror and The Sun suggest that Roberto Martinez is close to making Antolin Alcaraz his first signing and a deal could even be completed by the end of the week. The Paraguay international is available on a free transfer with his contract at Wigan Athletic set to expire this summer.

Another Latics player, Arouna Kone, is also rumoured to be on Everton’s radar, according to the Daily Mirror. Despite wanting to play in the Premier League, the striker says he does not know what will happen with his future as he is under contract at the DW Stadium. The Ivorian also explains that because Martinez has swapped Wigan for Everton, it does not necessarily mean he will too.

In the Liverpool Echo, new Sheffield United boss David Weir reveals that missing out on the job at Goodison Park spurred him on to pursue his own career as a manager. The Scot was speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, a day after his appointment at Bramall Lane was confirmed.

Everton’s rental arrangement with Liverpool City Council over the Club's Finch Farm training base is covered in the Liverpool Echo and also mentioned briefly in the Daily Star.
