At the mid-season break, the Women’s Super League table makes satisfying reading for Everton Ladies manager Andy Spence.

The Blues had been quietly and confidently going about their business this campaign before springing to life with a thumping 4-1 victory at Chelsea on Sunday in the final game before the European Championships.

It was a result which elevated Everton up to third place, with only Liverpool and Bristol Academy sitting higher in the standings.

For Spence it ends a promising opening to his reign as boss after he took over from Mo Marley at the end of last season.

Despite his side not quite hitting the targets he had set before the season kicked off, he is no less pleased to still be in the mix for a place in the top two.

“We had in mind a points total that we had wanted to reach by the midway stage but I’m happy to be in third,” he told evertontv.

“We haven’t quite reached the points target I set but obviously to be third means that we go into the second half of the season on the tails of the top two teams.

“If you would have said that at the start of the season then we would have taken that, just maybe with an increased points total. But it’s not a bad position to be in.”

Everton’s success has helped Spence settle into the role of manager, having stepped up from assistant under Marley. As such, he cannot wait to get back underway when the season resumes in August.

“I have absolutely loved it so far,” he adds. “By and large a lot of the credit has to go to the players in terms of them being such a good group of players to work with.

“From the very first moments in January when we started pre-season the players have given absolutely everything for Everton, which is what I asked of them. We have a committed group of 20 players who really want to do well for them team.

“That’s a fantastic position to be in as a manager. Hopefully we will continue that into the second half. Hopefully that half will be better than the first.”
