Weir Named Blades Boss

Under-21s coach departs Goodison Park.

Weir Named Blades Boss

Under-21s coach David Weir has today left Everton to take up the manager's job at League One Sheffield United.

The former Scotland centre-back has agreed a three-year-deal at Bramall Lane and will take over with immediate effect.

Weir, a former Club captain, made 269 appearances for the Blues during an eight-year spell following a 1999 move from SPL outfit Hearts.

He left Goodison Park in 2007 to join Glasgow Rangers but returned in February 2012, initially as a player-coach.

Weir, 43, has since worked as an assistant to Under-21s boss and former teammate Alan Stubbs but will now begin his first job in senior management.

"My first thoughts about the job are of excitement," said Weir. "I understand how privileged I am to be named manager of a fantastic football club like Sheffield United.

"I honestly can't wait to get started and get a real feel for the club, then obviously I am eager to get organised for when the players return for pre-season training later this month."

Last season, the Blades finished fifth in League One before suffering a play-off semi-final defeat to eventual winners Yeovil Town.

Weir takes over from Danny Wilson, who left the South Yorkshire side in early April.

Everyone at Everton would like to wish David the very best of luck in his new career.
