Former Blues Battle For Barbados Cup

Former Blues Battle For Barbados Cup

Alan Stubbs and a host of his former Goodison Park teammates have jetted across to the Caribbean in a quest to put Everton’s name on the 2013 Barbados Legends trophy.

The Blues will take their place in a spectacular six-a-side competition this weekend which features some of the Premier League’s greatest ever names from bygone years.

Legends of Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur will all be competing in the eight-team tournament, also featuring the Caribbean All-Stars and PFA Stars.

Stubbs will be lacing up his boots alongside former Blues favourites Lee Carsley, Steve Watson, John Collins, Kevin Kilbane, Francis Jeffers, Steve Simonsen and Marcus Bent for the two-day competition at the famous Kensington Oval cricket ground.

The eight teams - split into two groups - will compete in a round-robin format on Friday before the semi-finals and final take place the following day.

The Blues have been drawn in Group B where they will play Tottenham, Arsenal and the Caribbean All-Stars, meaning that a Merseyside derby is only possible if both teams make it through to the knock-out stages.

Stubbs insists the Everton representatives are determined to return from their trip with silverware to accompany their sun tans.

“It’s a nice little trip for us but we are under no illusions from Lee Carsley that we have got to go there and win it!” Stubbs told evertonfc.com.

“Cars has been putting pressure on all of us, ringing up asking if we are fit and what training we have been doing.

“It will be fun to catch up with quite a few players from the past but we will go there, give it our best shot and try to win something.”

Stubbs is set to get to grips with former Premier League foes Teddy Sheringham, Les Ferdinand, Kevin Davies and Luis Boa Morte in Barbados.

There are two teams and a certain handful of players, however, that the former Blues skipper believes could cause Everton the biggest problems.

“The likes of Chelsea and Liverpool will be amongst the favourites," he added. "Gianfranco Zola, Gus Poyet and Roberto Di Matteo are playing, as are Robbie Fowler and Jari Litmanen. They were obviously top players when they were playing.

“It will be interesting to see the shapes of a few of the players now since they have finished football and see who has been looking after themselves and who hasn’t.

“It should be a good test and it won’t be a stroll in the park.”
