Roberto Martinez vowed to deliver a team that Evertonians will be ‘extremely proud of’ after being unveiled as the Club’s new manager.

At his first press conference as Blues boss, the Spaniard – renowned for his striking style of football -  was asked how he intended to put his own stamp on the current Everton side.

“I will start working to make sure we play football that we are extremely proud of,” he said. “Over the next few months we need to get together to make sure that we are a winning side and a very strong side so that we can carry on to achieve more.

“Finishing in the top six was a magnificent achievement for Everton and there are many things we will need to build on if we want to improve that.

“Clearly the fans want to see a team that will give their all and be competitive in everything that we do.

“We will work on many aspects but it is very important that we don’t lose the good things that this team showed last season.”

The Blues have consistently challenged in the top half of the Premier League, securing top-eight finishes in every season since 2006.

And Martinez admitted he was privileged to be inheriting a squad laced with such an abundance of quality.

“I am very fortunate,” added the 39-year-old. “To have the players that Everton have at the moment is an incredible starting point.

“You can have a subjective view of any player or team when you look at stats but when you look at last season and finishing in the top six, it’s brilliant. What’s important is we don’t change that.

“If you asked me last season what Everton’s weakness was, I couldn’t tell you. When you have got a real competitive edge, like what this group of players has, you know how to always stay in games. They always know how to compete against any sort of opposition. That’s something that we can’t lose.

“We will try and bring in some new signings, but they will be players who will add that competition for places and give us different options."
