What The Papers Say - 3 June

Plaudits for Jagielka's display against Brazil in Monday's papers.

What The Papers Say - 3 June

Much of the attention in today's newspapers centres on England's 2-2 draw with Brazil last night.

The Daily Mirror have given Phil Jagielka a score of six out of 10 for his performance, saying: "The gritty Everton defender stood up to be counted, showing bravery and character against more skilful opponents." Leighton Baines, who limped off before the break, is awarded five out of 10.

The Daily Star have also provided ratings, handing both Jagielka and Baines six out of 10. Jagielka is praised for the manner in which he 'put his body on the line', despite the game at the revamped Maracana being a friendly.

The Independent award Jagielka seven out of 10, saying the centre back will have learned much from playing against next year's World Cup hosts. They also add the Blues skipper was often let down by players ahead of him.

Elsewhere, the Liverpool Echo features an interview with Alan Stubbs. Everton's Under-21 boss speaks of his delight at the Club having four players in the England Under-20 World Cup squad. John Stones, Chris Long, John Lundstram and Ross Barkley will all travel to Turkey for the tournament later this month.

The same newspaper also carries photographs of Everton legend Peter Reid in action during the Jonathan McCulloch charity match at John Moores University on Saturday.

The European Cup Winners' Cup-winning midfielder was joined at the event by boxer Derry Mathews and Coronation Street's Ryan Thomas.
