Phil Neville insisted he remains open minded about his future after ending his eight-year Everton career.

The veteran former Blues skipper has not yet ruled out continuing his playing career, with coaching and media work also providing fresh opportunities for the 36-year-old.

Neville wasn't involved in Everton's 2-1 defeat at Chelsea on Sunday but was an animated figure as he watched the game from the Stamford Bridge press box.

He said: "It has been an emotional week and a fantastic eight years. I am looking forward to the next challenge in my career. It has been a tough season but one of the most enjoyable.

"I am in a position many people would love to be in. I am coming to the end of my football career and I have got many options.

"I have been preparing for this moment for a number of years. I will take the next couple of weeks to wind down and mentally rest after a hectic couple of weeks. Then I will make my decision and I back myself to make the right decision."

Neville has struggled with a knee problem of late and hasn't played for Everton since early March. But he refused to rule out extending a professional playing career that has spanned nearly 20 years.

He continued: "I have not made a decision yet - I have not officially retired yet.

"Over the next couple of weeks that is the main decision I have to make; whether my body is up to the physical demands of Premier League football. I will sit down with my wife and family and come to that decision.

"I have thought about it but I will take a couple of weeks and have a holiday, then make the decision."

David EdwardsThe new manager who ever he is could do worse than having Phil Neville as a number 2, a true pro. and also an adopted blue through and through. Wish ing him well what ever he does.
