Chairman Bill Kenwright believes Sunday's goodbye to three iconic Everton characters was a memorable end to an 'extraordinary' week.

The win over West Ham United was the last Goodison game for David Moyes and Phil Neville on a day that was always guaranteed to be emotional even before the surprise return of Tim Cahill.

The Aussie jetted in from the US having played for the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night. The occasion allowed him to say his own farewells in a fashion his departure last summer didn't allow.

Mr Kenwright told evertontv: "It has been an extraordinary week and one I don't want to go through again. But it ended up, as I knew it would, with acclaim for, I think, one of the all time great mangers of this football club. I am not sure we will see anything like that ever again at this football club.

"David said we were a top three team today (in our performance) and it found its way towards a big ending. And the big ending was Timmy flying all that way. He called me up on Friday and said 'chairman, do you think I could come over and say goodbye to the gaffer?', which I thought was fantastic.

"I have just been speaking to David and he was saying what a part the crowd played today, especially in the second half when I thought the team were fantastic."

Goodison rose as one to pay tribute to the trio, with the chairman admitting he was moved by the response.

He continued: "Even though you are not surprised you still get blown away by the honesty of Evertonians and the regard they have for someone who has played such a major part in this football club's last 11 years.

"He has certainly left this football club in a really good place for the future. Now it is up to me and the board to make sure his legacy lives on.

"Anyone who was at Goodison Park was witnessing something that was part of the DNA of the football club.

"It is a team and a squad that has the DNA of Everton right through them. Since David arrived the team has been the thing, not the individual. This Club does not only attract special players but special people."
