Emotional Moyes Thanks Fans
David Moyes issues an emotional thank you to all Evertonians.
David Moyes has issued an emotional thank you to all Evertonians for the backing they have given him over the last 11 years.
The 50-year-old Scot will end his relationship with the Club at the end of the season as he prepares for a new role as manager of Manchester United.
But he admits leaving Goodison has been made all the harder because of the relationship he has forged with the supporters during his time on Merseyside.
He said: "The fans have been great to me. It was over 11 years ago when I came in and I had my first game against Fulham. I can remember it very well. The reception they gave me - and I was a relative unknown coming from Preston at the time - was great. The way they got behind me was great and the biggest thnig for me is to say thank you for the backing they have given me.
"It is not normal now that a manager stays in a job for 11 years so I have to thank them because if I didn't have their backing then I'm sure that wouldn't have happened."
Moyes moved to Goodison from Deepdale after former boss Walter Smith tipped the young Glaswegian for the Goodison hot-seat.
Moyes has thanked Smith for that opportunity and also the work he had done before Moyes' arrival.
He added: "When I took over I took over from a great guy in Walter Smith. He'd had a difficult period in trying to clear things out and the changes that were made.
"He made things easy for me because I came in and whilst there was still work to be done, I had a chance to bring some stability, build the team up and go and bring in a few players to make the job an awful lot easier."
