A loyal Evertonian received the surprise of a lifetime today when Tim Howard turned up on his doorstep unannounced – with a 2013/14 Season Ticket.

Owen Fennell-Rutherford was overwhelmed when the Blues number one paid him a visit at his Bootle home, after he was nominated to receive the extra-special treat by his uncle as part of the Club’s Make Their Day series.

The series gives supporters the chance to reward their fellow deserving Blues fans and 19-year-old Owen was selected as this week’s winner by Graeme Sharp for his inspiring attitude throughout a difficult time in his life.

At the age of nine, Owen suffered a serious brain haemorrhage and stroke which left him with visual impairment, poor short term memory and Cerebral Palsy on his right side.

But he didn’t let his traumatic illness hold him back and along with concentrating on his studies at school, Owen began playing football with Everton’s disability team and is also a member of the Southport Waterloo athletics club.

A Season Ticket holder from the age of seven, Owen lives and breathes Everton and his family decided that there was no better way to reward his incredible determination, than with a visit from a first team player.

Carly Woods, Owen’s cousin and fellow Season Ticket holder, said: “It’s been hard for him but he is absolutely amazing for what he has come through and we are all so proud of him. He had his first Season Ticket when he was seven years old so his whole life revolves around Everton and this has just been a brilliant surprise for him.”

Tim Howard said: “To see Owen’s excitement, that’s what this is all about. It’s so magical the connection that we Everton players have with our fans and the community and this is just the perfect example of that.

“It’s supporters like Owen that keep this Club alive at heart. The passion that the fans have, they carry that with the players. Owen’s strength and determination is really inspiring so it’s been awesome to meet him and present him with a Season Ticket.”

There’s still time for Evertonians to make their friend’s day with another three surprises due to take place in the next few weeks. To nominate a supporter, simply visit evertonfc.com/maketheirday to complete the nomination form.
